Orchids are exquisitely beautiful!

Orchids are wonderful flowers for wedding sprays, they are available in a plethora of species (around 25,000- 35,000) and colours. Due to the versatility, mysterious beauty  of flower paste orchids they add that special touch to any cake and/or cupcake. They are popular in wedding cake sprays balancing a tranquil balance to your design.

The orchid above is a Degarmoara orchid, it belongs to the Miltassia spices. As I have mentioned in previous tutorials most orchids have the same parts a column, anther cap, later petals, sepal petals, a lip and throat. The column and anther cap are the most time consuming. The overall flower shape is characteristically bilaterally symmetrical (the left and right halves of the blossom are mirror images).

The difference is the petal shape and the throat. The Degarmoara orchid’s throat is quite frilly and heart shaped..the orchid itself represent love!

I have written tutorials on flower paste orchids before, however I thought it might be helpful to watch me create the orchid. I have designed a detailed video showing the orchid from the column to the long tropical leaves that belong to the Degarmoara orchid.

I used a commercial flower paste, however if you prefer to create your own flower paste this the best recipe I have found.

You will need to prepare the paste one day ahead of creating your Degarmoara Orchids.

Lindy Smith Flower paste recipe. I have tried several flower paste recipes and this is the best!

Generally, I create nine orchids for a three tier cake, with a few extra petals and throat (in case of breakage).

Due to how thin the paste needs to be rolled out to you will want very soft brushes for dusting, the orchids are extremely fragile.

Now that you have all your materials together, please enjoy the video tutorial!

Have fun with your Degamoara Orchids, some have very vibrate colours with plenty of  spotted dots.

I mentioned I had the opportunity to see a lovely Degamoara Orchid, if you are unable to locate this tropical orchid Google images has several wonderful photographs.

I find it to be extremely helpful to have a live flower of the flower I am creating in my front of me.
