learn how to create sugar rose with alan dun's technique video

The smoke accent gives a soft romantic look!

I have posted several tutorials with roses, the response has been wonderful. In fact I have had a plethora of requests to create a video. I wanted to be sure to give you as must detail as possible. I either had to have a VERY long video or compose a series of videos, I chose the later. I wanted to break the sugar rose down to easy to follow steps, without overwhelming you.

The rose has four stages of development  the bud (sometime referred to as the Fairy),  partially open flower,  fully open flower,  and senescent flower. The first video tutorial I am going to start with is the bud to partially open rose. The partially open rose is a transitional stage where some of the petals begin to open away from the centre of the rose. The rose is quite charming at this stage, almost mysterious. The color begins to lighten slightly, some of the petals begin to curl backwards.

This beauty, I found on the Santa Clarita website

As you can see in this photograph the rose is partially open, some of the petals are cupping away from the centre and some are still fairly close. This is an essential part of building your sugar rose, your rose will look life like.

Red smoked rose mise en place

I wanted mimic a black magic rose. I was dining at one of my favorite restaurants, and they happened to have this type of rose for their decor. I fell in love with this rose and wanted to recreate it for the tutorial.

This elegant rose looks as if it is turning from red to black..Amazing!

If you will be creating several roses, work in an assembly line fashion: if you will be making a dozen roses, work on all buds and move from there. If you work on one rose from start to finish it will double your time. Also I explain in the video, I dusted the rose after each stage was completed, this is due to the intense color. Normally I would dust the completed rose.

The Rosebud:

If the red color is staining you fingers and it is driving you crazy you can wear gloves. My personal preference is to not wear gloves, my hands are quite small, the gloves are large, and I am afraid I might drop my rose. As you can see in the video my fingers are stained red; it washes off in a few days.
